Casey Mráz is a composer, musician, songwriter, playwright, sound designer, teaching artist and father from Albuquerque, New Mexico. His main instruments are piano, guitar, accordion; however, he also studies and plays various world instruments such as the charango, cavaquinho, cuica, duduk and more. He studied theatre at UNM and Charles University (Prague, Czech Republic) and earned an MFA in Dramatic Writing in 2009.

 

As a songwriter and composer, Casey’s main project is his quartet, METAMORFOS. In the group he writes all of the original material and fronts the band with accordion, guitar, charango and vocals. Alongside him are bassist Aaron Vega, drummer David Flores and Cristiano Orellana on flutes, rhythm guitar and percussion. He also records solo material and performs solo at various music venues around Abq. In addition to live music he has also composed music for many theatre, dance & circus performances as well as films and video games.

 

As a musician, Casey plays various instruments in several Abq-based bands. He plays accordion, charango, cavaquinho & guitar in the Latin music groups BARACUTANGA as well as CONCEPTO TAMBOR. He plays keyboards in the indie rock band RADIO FREE ABQ, the Selena Tribute Band ANYTHING FOR SELENAS and THE DAVID GARCIA BAND (singer/songwriter). Additionally, he plays with a few world music groups such as THE REELERS, (Abq’s own authentic Celtic group) and QAPAC, a music group dedicated to the music of the Andes mountains. Casey also worked as the Music Director for The Show (Abq’s premiere Improv Comedy Troupe) from 2010 -2022 where he collaborated with Bob Odenkirk on several live comedy shows.

As a playwright and sound designer, Casey has worked with numerous theatre companies over the last 20 years including Buran Theatre Co. (NYC) where Casey was the Resident Composer from 2013 – 2017 and Tricklock Theatre Co. (Abq, NM) where Casey was the Music Director from 2004 – 2014. In addition, he designs sound for many Abq theatres including The Vortex, the African-American Performing Arts Center, UNM Dept. of Theatre & Dance, West End Productions and many more. As a playwright he has had his original plays produced by several theatres including Buran Theatre Co., Tricklock Theatre Co., The Vortex and more.

 

As a teaching artist, Casey has taught music, theatre & writing with many organizations including The Santa Fe Opera (2010 – 2020), The National Hispanic Cultural Center (2009 – 2021), the University of New Mexico (2006 – 2009) and Dolores Gonzales Elementary School (2011 – 2016). He currently teaches music and theatre at Escuela del Sol Montessori School.
